Elevate your style using the 3 color rule!
Sorting through endless fashion advice can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re short on time or mental energy. But don’t worry—I’ve got a simple, effective tip to help you look effortlessly put together.
Next time you’re getting dressed, try the 3-Color Rule. I love this style hack because it’s so easy and you can use what you already have in your closet!

What Is The 3 Color Rule?
The 3-Color Rule is a design principle used in fashion, art, and interior decorating to create a balanced, visually harmonious look that doesn’t overwhelm the eye.
Simply put, when getting dressed, just stick to 3 color families so that your look isn’t too busy.
Black and white don’t count since they are neutrals, but if you wear a lot of neutral tones, feel free to include them as one of your three “colors”.
Some fashion advice suggests breaking down your outfit into a formula, like this:
- Dominant color: 60%
- Secondary color: 30%
- Accent color: 10%
Personally, I don’t think about percentages when getting dressed—it feels way too mathematical and I prefer to trust my eye and go with what feels balanced. But if this formula helps, use it! If it feels too restrictive, scrap it. My goal is to help you make getting dressed fun and easy!
Incorporating Prints In The 3 Color Rule

You can definitely apply this rule to prints! Just consider the print itself as one of your three “colors”.
To keep your look cohesive, pull your secondary and accent colors from the print’s color palette. It doesn’t have to be exact but aim to stay within the same families.
Once you feel confident using this rule, try experimenting with print-mixing. Print mixing is an amazing way to build a standout and authentic personal style, but I’ll break down those tips in a future post.
